Going Green: From Tie and Rail Recycling Programs to Stormwater and Waste Management, the M/W Departments of BNSF and NS are Taking Environmentally Friendly Service to a New Level
This article looks at how BNSF and NS are pursuing environmentally friendly approaches to their maintenance of way practices. BNSF reports that close to 100% of its wooden ties have been recycled or reused in some fashion. The railroad is also recycling its rail and turnouts, and is eliminating cleaners and chemicals from its maintenance programs. The article relates that NS is focused on reducing water runoff and is pumping old into tanks rather than draining it. NS is also using composite bridge and track ties, as well as steel ties that have a longer life than wood and do not require treatment processes involving chemicals.
