Emergency Action: Florida's Turnpike Enterprise is Targeting Incident Response, Emergency Management and Vehicle Detection to Create a State-of-the-Art ITS System
This article focuses on the importance placed by the Florida Turnpike Enterprise on emergency management and detection as part of a larger Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Its new response system, the roadway interference scene clearance (RISC) program, will cover its 460 miles of roadway with detection and monitoring equipment. RISC is a useful tool for both the Turnpike and the people of Florida, as a closure costs the private company $200,000 per hour and private citizen’s time. In addition to partnering with a number of companies to expedite roadway clearing, the Turnpike is also improving its software at its emergency management office. The final section of the article describes the specifically ITS-related components of RISC- namely its cameras, vehicle-detection stations (VDS), travel-time system, highway advisory radio, and fiber-optic cables.
