Tri-Society Standard Guides Zinc-Rich Coating Application for Bridges
State highway departments and fabrication shops have a new source for guidance on the proper application of zinc-rich primers to new bridges, with the second edition of the Guide Specifications for Application of Coating Systems With Zinc Rich Primers to Steel Bridges. The Guide now includes parameters for applying both inorganic and organic zinc rich systems. The new edition of the guide specification is the result of close collaboration among the American Association of State Highways and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA), and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings. The second edition of the specification (referred to as S 8.1-2006 by NSBA) was approved by AASHTO in September 2006 and is soon to be published by the association. This article reviews the specification and discusses its importance to the bridge industry, the development of the specification, and how it can be obtained.
