Traveler Response to Transit-Oriented Development

This paper describes how the latest installment from the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Report 95/Traveler Response to Transportation System Changes Handbook series provides a synthesis of knowledge on travel behavior changes (e.g., ridership, trip generation, vehicle-miles-of-travel) that are associated with transit-oriented development (TOD). The “Traveler Response Handbook,” as the series is more-familiarly known, has been hailed by transportation planners and engineer practitioners that appeared in The Urban Transportation Monitor as one of the “most essential transportation publications.” It offers a synthesis of travel demand and the changes to it and manifestations of it that occur when transportation operational, policy or facility changes are implemented. It is being published as a set of nineteen “chapter” volumes. Identified as “Chapter 17 – Transit-Oriented Development,” the latest installment has been several years in the making and has involved the review of numerous journal articles and reports as well as interviews with several practitioners. As of this writing, the Revised Final Report version of Chapter 17 has been submitted for the final steps in the publication process and is anticipated to be published during by late Spring 2007. This paper presents a high-level overview of some of the key findings.
