Sustainability: Can It Make Transit Facilities More Efficient?
This paper describes how the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) owns and operates an automated high-speed rail transit system and a wide range of facilities that support it. BART serves the metropolitan areas of San Francisco and Oakland and the Bay Area's diverse municipalities. BART’s facilities are mostly automated and in a form of intelligent built environment. BART’s Sustainability Policy promotes transit oriented development and public transit usage. The policy also calls for optimization of resource efficiency, environmental preservation, and improved transit service quality and cost effectiveness. Enforcing this policy will encourage sustainable practices at the community and regional scales. BART Facilities Standards regulate the planning, design, construction and operations of BART facilities, with an emphasis on sustainable principles and operability of its facilities. The Standards utilize internet-and intranet-based information technology to effectively manage information and resources on smart and sustainable built environment. Sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), BART is assuming a leadership role in transforming a Sustainability Policy into practical transit facilities standards. BART is applying scientific research and development methodology through a pilot project approach to search for effective sustainable materials and technologies that are compatible with its intelligent infrastructure. The findings from the pilot projects are then incorporated into BART Facilities Standards.
