The Future of the Nation's Surface Transportation System
In this guest commentary, the author, a former assistant secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, focuses on the future of the country’s surface transportation system. He reports that the National Surface Transportation Policy Commission is expected to release a report at the end of 2007, and that report has stimulated a number of provocative papers and discussions. He suggests that America’s continuing economic productivity demands a commitment to restoring and strengthening the country’s surface transportation networks, inland waterways, railroads, and highways. Paying for this will require both public and private funding.
