Testing Trio: Three Unusual Applications

Modular bridges of a temporary nature are the focus of this article. The examples explored include a versatility demonstration by the United States Army Corps of Engineers of its Acrow bridges (for use in refurbishing the Blue Stone Dam on West Virginia's New River). The purpose of the bridge is to allow contractors to access components of the dam without the need to haul equipment through local communities. The second example involves the United Nations installing several Acrow bridges in the West African Republic of Liberia. The purpose of these bridges is to reconnect communities that have been divided by civil war. By reopening primary and rural roadways, citizens would have access to schools, medical facilities, and markets to expand economic development. The third example is an Acrow bridge in use in Mindenville, NY designed to solve a potential emergency situation. There, the purpose of the bridge is to keep access lines to emergency services (e.g. fire, ambulance) open while the existing bridge over the Erie Barge Canal is closed and a new permanent structure is built.
