Harbor Heights: Construction at Stonecutters

Described as "the world's second longest cable-stayed bridge" (with a main span of 1,018m), Hong Kong's Stonecutters Bridge is designed to link the new territories in the east with Hong Kong International Airport on Lantau Island. Scheduled for completion in 2009, Stonecutters is also designed to further establish Hong Kong as an important international transportation hub by allowing more direct access to container ports eight and nine. This article discusses the challenges the builders have faced during construction, such as building a bridge in the heart of one of the busiest container ports in the world. The 24-hour operations of the container port have added considerable complexity to the planning and scheduling of construction activities. Other challenges have involved overcoming geological conditions (a fault zone found under the pilecap) and environmental conditions (a harsh marine environment containing high concentrations of marine salts and industrial pollutants). The author discusses these and related issues in considerable detail.
