Analysis for Light Rail Transit Convertibility Requirements while Planning and Implementing Bus Rapid Transit
This paper focuses on the Light Rail Transit (LRT) convertibility analysis that was carried out during conceptual and preliminary design stages for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors in Houston, TX for Metro Solution (MS) Program initiatives. The paper begins with the highlights of goals, purpose, and assumptions for pursuing the LRT convertibility with a brief introduction of the aggressive MS Program that is underway at Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority (Houston Metro) where it is intended to apply. The paper then covers the general approach discussing infrastructure, facilities, systems and vehicles elements to reveal some of the thinking for BRT to LRT convertibility considerations. It should be noted that the needs and requirements were derived, as one way of analyzing this subject by the author while working at the Houston Metro. However, opinions, views and positions presented in this paper do not necessarily reflect those held by Houston Metro.
