Funding Glitche$ Impact Top Rail Projects

The 2007 Top Rail Project Survey of Metro Magazine shows New York City Transit holding onto the top spot in terms of project costs slated for the year, with $7.54 billion. Helping push it to the top again is the Second Avenue Subway, which just broke ground, and which is the first new subway line in NYC in more than 70 years. New Jersey Transit made a large leap from 28 to number 3, but most of last year's top agencies maintained similar rankings from last year. Although the survey is usually called the "Top 50," cancellations and completions made it impossible to reach that number. Two notable projects that were halted were in Ottawa, Ontario, whose $653 million light rail project was terminated, and Triangle Transit Authority's $809 million project that was cancelled because it was unable to secure full funding. There is a slight decrease in project costs from the last two years, down about $1 billion. New projects for the list are also noted, along with statistics for the top 47 projects in terms of cost nationwide.
