The perfect solution
This article describes the use in the UK of a specific product, Safecote, to treat dry road salt to increase moisture content, reducing wastage and environmental damage. Dry salt delivered from the spinner is largely lost before having an effect on the road surface. Two alternatives are possible: pre-wetted salt and Safecote-treated salt. Pre-wetted salt requires considerable cost in additional infrastructure and can cause corrosion damage to salting vehicles. Safecote, an agricultural by-product, is sprayed onto salt by the salt producer before delivery to the customer. Two case studies are presented of the product in use in northern and midlands England: both local authorities report reduction in spread rates and in the amount of chloride leached to the environment, while improving the amount of salt acting on the road surface.
