Let's get physical

Computer simulation is increasingly replacing physical testing in the development of tyres. Tyre test machinery suppliers such as STL are producing equipment that can simulate vehicle testing, incorporating test software that will simulate any test track or road course in the world. The machines are instrumented with load cell accelerometers and strain gauges. Tyre testing programmes that incorporate both physical and simulation processes will allow testing over a shorter time period. MTS offers a roadway surface simulation that offers engineers better correlation with track testing and is working on a test machine that delivers higher test motions. Microstep is also developing computer simulation design testing processes. The company has started producing laboratory high-speed uniformity tests to measure the force parameters at speeds up to 199mph and to study geometrical surface qualities and static wave. Regulatory requirements are another reason why physical testing will remain.
