COMPOSITE BRIDGE CROSSES THE TRACKS
The design and construction of an unusual two-span composite bridge is described. The bridge, part of Southampton's western approach roads scheme, is being constructed with a 60 degree skew over a four track electrified main line. The beams are 550 mm by 1010 mm 'I' section, with the bottom flange encased in 55 n/mm2 concrete. The beam webs are protected with lightweight concrete carrying a 200 mm slab cantilevered at the edges. The method of erection of the 18 side span and 16 main span beams is explained; safety aspects were very important. Glass reinforced cement permanent formwork panels will bridge the spaces between the bridge trapezoidal void formers. Vertical prestressing tendons cast into the abutment will be stressed and anchored to the edge of the deck slab. Special sliding shutters have been designed for the casting of the varying width cantilevered edge slab. A maximum deflection of 250 mm is designed.
