The rig issue
The trend towards fewer, wider and lower-profile tyres on trucks lowers chassis height, saves weight and reduces operating costs. Associated developments from tyre manufacturers are reviewed. These include the Super Single drive-axle tyres from Goodyear Dunlop UK, Michelin X One from Michelin America, and the use of innovative lightweight materials for the steel cords by Continental. The Michelin Durable Technologies (MDT) concept is an array of advanced solutions including InfiniCoil circumferential reinforcement technology and regenerative treads. Predictions are made as to future trends. These include the increasing use of technology in the development of intelligent tyres, increases in load capacity and new methods for analysing tyre performance, and reductions in rolling resistance associated with longer usable tread life.
