Making an impact

The introduction of the European Standard that regulates safety barriers, EN1317, has led to developments in new barrier systems, such as Protect 365 from Corus, UK. The design of Protect 365 is based on passive safety, which involves providing passengers with maximum protection in the event of an accident. State-of-the-art computer modelling was used in the development of the product. Computer modelling was used to assess various lengths of barrier to find a representation of real life road conditions. This was followed by a physical crash test at this length to verify the model results. European guidelines only required barrier testing for the heaviest and lightest vehicles in a barrier class. Corus showed that the difference in vehicle size had a significant effect on the barrier behaviour and adjusted Protect 365 accordingly to ensure that medium-sized vehicles were also safe. Computer modelling provided information about the impact of a crash on individual components of the barrier and of the car itself. Protect 365 was designed as an untensioned system that does not need regular maintenance.
