Railjet prepares for take-off!
An interview with Herr Forster, head of intercity operations of OeBB, Austria is reported. Passenger numbers on long-distance passenger trains are rising and a new generation of rolling stock is under development. The outlook for Austria's western lines is very positive, with passenger numbers up 8%, but the picture elsewhere is mixed, with international traffic via the Brenner Pass reduced. The reduction in traffic to Germany is compensated for by a rise in business from Eastern Europe. OeBB has not been affected by low-cost airlines. The forthcoming Siemens Railjet passenger stock, which will operate at a maximum speed of 230km/h, is discussed. The trains will be formed of six trailers and one driving trailer. The Railjet sets are scheduled for delivery in 2008-2009. Until Railjet arrives, OeBB will use ICE tilting emus on the Danube corridor in cooperation with German Rail (DB). From 2009, there will be a two-hourly service from Budapest via Vienna to Munich. The aim is to offer a comparable level of passenger service with the Siemens Velaro emus. OeBB will market the advantages of high-speed rail travel. Special attention will be paid to the interior design, with luggage racks in the middle of the coach so passengers can see their belongings at all times.
