State of play
Plans to build a 23 km-long road bridge over the Gulf of Aqaba, linking Saudi Arabia and Egypt, are outlined. The link will include a 2.5 km-long suspension bridge. Tenders are expected to be invited for a feasibility study for the bridge, which is expected to be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, with a toll paid by users. The planned bridge will also support two oil pipelines. Challenges include the deep sea depth and political issues. Another scheme in the area is the 40 km-long Friendship Bridge connecting Bahrain and Qatar. The design is expected to be similar to that of the King Fahd causeway. There are about 20 major bridge schemes worth an estimated US$12,000 million planned or under way in the region. In Dubai, the government is proceeding with an estimated US$1,000 million bridge-building programme to construct six major new bridges across the creek to relieve congestion on existing crossings. Abu Dhabi has three major bridge projects underway, including the 1,455m Saadiyat Bridge linking Saadiyat Island and Abu Dhabi Island. Kuwait is proceeding with plans for a US$3,000 million project to build a causeway across Kuwait Bay. In Jordan, construction of the Wadi Abdoun Bridge in Amman is underway. A table is presented listing the status of new bridge construction projects in the area.
