The ticketless travel era

An interview with Francis Cheung, senior consultant in the Passenger Transport Section, AVV Transport Research Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is presented. Cheung describes the new smart card initiative for public transport. A strip ticket system or strippenkaart was introduced in 1980 to provide a fully integrated ticketing and fare system for both regional and urban transport. The limitations of this system included a lack of up-to-date information on the consumers using the system. The Dutch Ministry of Transport and the Public Transport Authorities (PTAs) looked at the experiences of other countries in using contactless smart card technology. A pilot project was introduced in the Rotterdam region and the new electronic ticketing approach is expected to be used nationwide in 2009. The benefits of the smart card to the PTAs and in reducing congestion are discussed.(A)
