CONTAINER TERMINAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE: THE RUBBER-TIRED GANTRY CRANE SYSTEM
The latest terminal operation system developed by the author's company Kawasaki Kishen Ltd., and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., has been installed at the "K" Line's Ohi Container Terminal, at Berth Nos. 1 and 2 of the terminal at Ohi, Tokyo. The paper gives a general outline of the total operation and the computerised control system at the terminal. Rubber-tyred Transtainers made by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co. are used and these are able to travel freely anywhere in the yard, changing lanes at will in addition to being able to stack containers in multiple rows and heights. The optimum positioning of the Transtainer, the control of work instructions to it, of cargo handling by it and its steering are all described. The effects of the introduction of the system are listed with tables giving details of the Terminal, its container handling equipment, operational information, container throughput 1977, shipping services data 1977, manpower and capital costs (in yen).
