Role Searching: In This Post-9/11 Era, Railroads and Transit Agencies Continue to Seek Security Funding and Support From the Federal Government
This article relates that U.S. railroads and transit agencies, while focused on providing a safer and more secure rail network, remain in need of dedicated funding from the federal government to support their efforts. It describes efforts by the Transportation Security Administration, such as establishing priorities directed at securing high-risk tunnels, structures, and terminals. Officials from the transit industry contend, however, that priorities need funding in order for them to be achieved. The article also notes that while the rail and public transit industries are finding support, the freight rail sector is experiencing funding frustrations. One example given is that of hazardous materials transportation, noting that liability insurance costs for transporting hazardous materials have risen greatly.
