Future Train Traffic Control: Control by Re-Planning
This article explores planning strategies used to improve train traffic control as a cost-efficient way to improve train traffic punctuality and increase the use of existing and future railway infrastructure. The authors note that working in a preventive manner is poorly supported and train traffic controllers are usually restricted to just solving problems as they occur. In this article, the authors describe a proposed control strategy and use a case study to evaluate the control strategy and the prototype tool derived from the research. They find that by shifting the control paradigm to a high-level control strategy, many of the present problems may be avoided. The case study involved 21 train traffic controllers and a simulated prototype environment. The majority of the participating train traffic controllers were positive to the new concepts and ideas demonstrated in the case study. The authors conclude by briefly describing a pilot project being undertaken by the Swedish National Railway Administration to implement a full-scale operative demonstrator system. This system will provide more conclusive results on how the control strategy works in reality, not only in simulated environments.
