Evaluation of the Performance of the THOR-alpha Dummy
The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the overall evaluation of the biomechanical performance of the THOR-alpha dummy, which is the most likely candidate to replace the Hybrid III dummy in front impact crash test regulations. The THOR-alpha dummy was evaluated by 6 European laboratories as to the dummy's repeatability, durability and sensitivity. Results of impact tests indicate that the THOR-alpha response was close to the human response for many areas of the body - spine, thorax, shoulder, knee/femur. However, as is, the THOR-alpha dummy is not durable enough. Recommendations are offered for improving the dummy so that it can be further evaluated.
