The Effects of Occupant Age on Patterns of Rib Fractures to Belt-Restrained Drivers and Front Passengers in Frontal Crashes in Japan
When elderly people are injured in automobile accidents, their injuries are generally more severe than those of younger individuals. In addition, crash injuries of elderly vehicle occupants often occur in the chest. This study investigated front seat vehicle occupants in Japan who were involved in head on collisions. Drivers and front seat passengers all wore seat belts. This paper discusses the injuries that occurred to the occupants. The elderly occupants had rib fractures, and the younger ones did not. Rib fractures of the elderly occupants frequently occurred near the seat belt line. Rib fractures that occurred during air bag deployment were more often located in the lower part of the chest. The paper describes the injury differences by age, gender, accident severity and airbag deployments.
