WATER POLLUTION FROM SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS
The Durham, New Hampshire, Conservation Commission became concerned in 1975 that pollutants in the snow removed from the town's streets and dumped into the Oyster River might be polluting the river. Consequently, a study was initiated to determine the type and quantity of pollutants in the snow being dumped on the banks of the river. Snow samples were obtained from the snow dumped at two points on the river for two winters. These samples were melted and then analyzed for pH, chlorides, solids, BOD//5, COD, coliform, and lead. Samples of natural (freshly fallen) snow were also analyzed for the same constituents, and lead analyses were performed on dump site soil and river sediment samples. This paper quantifies the data from analyses completed, compares this work with previous work reported in the literature, and addresses the potential environmental impact of these pollutants on the Oyster River or other aquatic environments.
