Panama Canal Construction Shapes the Future for Shipping

This article discusses the $5.25 billion plans for expanding the Panama Canal. According to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), which is the quasi-governmental organization that oversees the Canal, these funds will be acquired through a combination of loans and tolls fees that are slated to rise slowly over the next twenty years. The expansion has been necessitated by the rapid expansion of post-Panamax ships that are too large to fit through the canal’s locks. The type of lock will also be changed from the existing hinged miter gates to locks that use wheeled rolling gates that slide into the lock wall. Some of the improvements to be pursued include dry excavations, improvements to extant navigational channels, and water supply improvements. Issues surrounding the dredging of the canal are discussed in detail.
