Abu Dhabi's 'Illogical' Crossing Slowly Takes Shape
In this article the author describes the construction of the highly idiosyncratic Sheikh Zayed bridge currently being constructed in Abu Dhabi. The twin deck 845-meter structure connects the island to the mainland and is supported by wave-like structural boxes. The difficulties associated with fabricating the baroque steelwork could lengthen the project’s completion time from three years to six. Despite the awkward structural design, engineers have instituted numerous anticorrosion measures, aiming for a 100-year service life for the bridge. The various unique design features that have resulted in technological and contractual issues are discussed.
