Optimising Line 9's EPBM Parameters

In this article the author discusses the earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) specifications for the excavation of the Fira-to-Park tunnel along Barcelona’s metro Line 9. The 1.3 kilometer tunnel was driven through Holocene deposits from the Llobregat River, consisting primarily of silty sands and as well as some sandy silts, silt and silty clay. Instrumentation such as extensometers and inclinometers were placed on the surface of the bore in order to monitor displacement. Constructors also hoped to locate an optimum EPB working method to avoid passive ground treatments. Three different zones were analyzed in this fashion and, despite limited possible instrumentation in the third zone, the authors still believe there to be suitable correlations established between settlements and volume losses. The parameters related to volume loss are face pressure, shield slurry injection, and tail shield grouting. It was found that, implementing the suggestions presented, this volume loss can be cut from 1.5 percent to .5 percent.
