A Love Triangle: As MoDOT's $260 million redesign of Kansas City's Notorious Triangle Comes to a Close, Motorists are Feeling More Positive About the Drive

This article describes a $260 million redesign of Kansas City, Missouri’s messiest traffic interchange, where I-470, I-435, U.S, 71 and multiple local routes converge to form of triangle of congestion. The reconstruction, in the making for nine years, is almost finished and promises the more than 250,000 daily commuters a smoother, faster, safer ride. The author describes the five phases of the redesign, the amount of material used, and the challenges faced by contractors who could not use conventional pier locations. To solve that problem, the construction company used steel box girders as framed-in-cap, a complex design where a cross girder is supported on piers to reduce the length of the span. The design was a traditional design-bid-build project, but worked more like a design-build, which shaved two years off the project’s schedule.
