UNDRAINED MODULUS FROM VANE SHEAR TESTS
The discussers congratulate the authors for their study in which the applicability of the conventional shear vane test is extended to the measurement of the undrained modulus of deformation of a cohesive soil medium. A method of estimating the undrained deformability characteristics of a cohesive soil medium by making use of a vane with an elliptical balde shape having major axis=2a sub p and minor axis=2b sub p has recently been proposed. It is also shown that when considering the undrained torque-twist curve for a rectangular vane the region corresponding to the inscribed spheroid remains practically rigid and that the deformation of the remainder of the elastic region contributes little to the deformational response of the torque-twist curve. Comments are also made on equations that represent analytical results.
