The INDOT US 231 Relocation Study: Citizen Input Shaping Community Impact Assessment and Context-Sensitive Solutions
This article discusses a relocation project carried out by the Indiana DOT (INDOT) as part of an effort to reshape citizen involvement in transportation decision-making. The highway is US 231, which has been subject to relocation efforts for 10 years, with the goal of removing the U.S. route from downtown Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana, home of Purdue University. A community impact assessment and a community advisory committee were established to enhance communication with affected parties. The process by which these bodies were organized and how they interacted with each other and the overall project design is described. Context-sensitive solutions derived from the groups’ work are detailed.
