Public Transport Developments in Dubai
Dubai is in the midst of a phenomenal growth spurt. This rapid increase in population, economic development and tourism requires an excellent public transportation infrastructure. This article describes how Dubai's integrated transportation master plan is shaping the emirate. The master plan addresses many forms of transportation, including nonmotorized modes, taxis, buses, school transport and rail transit. The main principle behind the mobility master plan is modal integration. Large interchange stations will make it easy to transfer between modes and a single fare policy is being implemented for trains, buses and water taxis. Private developers of areas in and around Dubai also are being required to connect local collective transportation networks (such as monorails and automatic people movers) to the public transportation network. This emphasis on public transportation should transform Dubai within the next few years.
