Efficient Evaluation: How Four Partners Successfully Married Hybrid Technology With a Current Diesel Powertrain

When the Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge was issued by the United Kingdom's Department of Transport in 2003, a diesel-fuelled full-hybrid was proposed by Ricardo. A $5.65 million (US) program was awarded for demonstrator vehicle development using hundred gram technology when Ricardo teamed with QinetiQ and PSA Peugeot Citroën to form a group known as Efficient-C. The group looked at everything from engine cooling circuits, braking, steering, air conditioning, and powertrain as it pursued a fuel savings of almost one third over 2003-era models. It added benefits such as zero-emission pure electric operation for sensitive city centers. The authors discuss research and development efforts by Efficient-C in combining diesel and hybrid technologies.
