Airports and Aviation Weather Services: A New Alliance Forming?
In this question-and-answer formatted article, the author discusses how weather (apart from human error) still plays the biggest role in aviation, especially when things go wrong. The author discusses weather information (from regulatory and economic aspects), ground safety during severe weather events (e.g., thunderstorms, windstorms, ice and snow), and emergencies involving weather (e.g., tropical cyclones, snow storms, floods, dust and sand storms). Finally, the author notes that aviation meteorology and the field of environmental protection can partner with each other to help mitigate the unwanted side effects of greenhouse gases. Such a partnership could produce precise forecasts of atmospheric conditions leading to flight plan improvements that help reduce unnecessary holdings, flight deviations and ground queues at major airports.
