December 2006 Traffic Deaths Down 12 Percent
In December 2006, motor vehicle traffic deaths fell 12 percent during the month, totaling 3,490 compared to the December 2005 figure of 3,980. Disabling injuries in 2006 through December totaled close to 2.3 million, down 5 percent from 2005. The cost of motor vehicle collisions for 2006 fell 4 percent from 2005, to a total of close to $238.1 billion. The estimated annual mileage death rate fell 4 percent from 2005 to 1.48 deaths per 100 million miles of vehicle travel. Statistics on a statewide basis are also given.
