Vehicle Sizes Inch Down... Literally!
This article discusses the overall trends in prevalence of vehicle type according to parking geometrics. The article notes that, while both small and large vehicle classes have been declining somewhat, there is an increase in medium vehicles. Small cars are those that fit into compact spots sized 7’6” by 16’. The article also provides a more detailed break-down of car sales that indicates the upswing in car sales and decrease in sport utility vehicle (SUV) sales, the decrease of pickup trucks, the increase in cross-over utility vehicles (CUV), and the relative stability of vans. Consultants offer that the ideal parking space size for car geometry is a space that will accommodate the 85th percentile of average car size, which, as of 2005 and 2006, is 6’7 by 17’3”, or 113.2 square feet.
