Desert Riches Fuel Network Revival
This article describes plans for an overhaul of Algeria’s railway system. Greater political stability and revenues from oil and gas are allowing increased investment in rail infrastructure, including new rolling stock. The government has made about $5 billion (US) available to address needs on the 4,200-km route network. Farthest along in terms of completion is a project to electrify the Alger suburban network. It is expected to be finished by August 2008.There is also a possibility that suburban services will be handed off to a private operator. Other key areas are the route from Annaba to Tebessa that carries large quantities of iron ore and the High Plateau Line, planned since the early 1980s to run east-west across the country to the south of the Atlas chain. Maps and details of projects are given.
