Express to the Sky
In this article the author describes the new manner in which a potential pilot may obtain their multi-crew pilot (MPL) license from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This new method expedites the acquisition of a license while reducing the amount of required flight time and increasing simulated time. Although some critics feel as though simulation is an inadequate substitute, the ICAO has implemented the measure in order to cope with the projected demand of 17,000 new pilots between 2005 and 2024. The new curriculum is being beta-tested in four stages prior to implementation, with pilots from East Asian airlines providing cadets for the testing. It is claimed that the proposed MPL program is similar to the European ab initio training programs, which cut much experience such as single-engine aircraft solo flights that may be of little help to commercial pilots.
