Beat blind side risks
Turnsafe has launched a self-adjusting nearside mirror to solve the problems of blindside manoeuvres in articulated trucks. The mirror couples an image processing system with an image sensor embedded into the mirror housing and the system can be fitted to any standard electric truck mirror. Images supplied to a miniature digital camera allow an image processor to map the trailer side. Movements are translated into impulses that tell the standard electric mirror motors to adjust the mirror in real-time. The mirror moves to keep the rear of the trailer and axles in sight even at severe angles of articulation. The intelligent system will recalibrate when trailers are swapped or mirror positions changed to suit the driving position. The mirrors have passed BSI tests, have an E number and have been approved for road use by VOSA. The author describes a test drive in an artic fitted with the Turnsafe mirror.
