Meeting in the middle
Steel-maker Corus of Corby, UK, which manufactures crash barriers, has collaborated with DAF Trucks on crash simulations involving heavy goods vehicles. Using simulation and engineering data supplied by DAF and in tandem with DAF engineers, Corus produced crash software that analysed lorry impacts with crash barriers. This led to improvements in barrier performance and reliability and reduced costs. The software helped in the design of the Vetex untensioned barrier systems, which are faster and simpler to install and easier to maintain than traditional systems. The collaboration gave DAF engineers simulation data on crash barriers that could be used in truck design. DAF can assess the interactions between barrier and impacting truck and optimise truck crash absorption systems, minimising risks to drivers and other vehicle users. The collaboration has cut development times and costs to both companies.
