Open plan surgery

This article describes the processes used to open up the basement of St Pancras Station's Midland Grand Hotel in London, UK in order to create a direct link between King's Cross St Pancras Underground station in front of the hotel and St Pancras International railway terminus behind it. The work is being done by Corber, a joint venture between Costain, Laing O'Rourke, Bachy Soletanche and Emcor Rail. The basement space was divided into four rooms with wall thicknesses up to 1.5m. Space between the chambers was limited and the doorways formed extremely tight bottlenecks. Key challenges to Corber included working in these tight spaces and limiting settlement. Instrumentation was installed on the upper floors of the hotel to monitor the building's response to the work. The initial work involved miners excavating pits to locate the hotel's brick foundations. Ground was then taken down to the same level throughout the basement area. Reinforced concrete strip foundations were cast either side of the walls whilst the walls were opened up and new cast iron columns installed.
