Towards the 2030 railway

The author discusses how the railway must change over the next 25 years to keep pace with society in an address to the Railway Study Association in London, UK. He suggests that the railway must be kept to time, be open seven days a week, be an attractive experience to passengers and be easy to use. Future railways must have low maintenance requirements, must use energy efficiently and be affordable to the taxpayer. With respect to these requirements, he discusses station design, low-maintenance infrastructure, the predict and prevent approach to train maintenance, train design and reductions in the weight of trains, track design and absolute track geometry, level crossings, and increasing capacity. The need to focus on individual rail markets (inter city, local services, urban and suburban services, lightweight and heavy freight) is discussed with reference to the benefits of high-speed lines. The importance of accelerating improvements to the UK railway system is emphasised.
