SJ wins traffic from air and road
An interview with SJ (Swedish State Railways) Chief Executive Jan Forsberg is presented. Sweden's state railway has won market share from airlines and buses in recent years and traffic volumes in the intercity rail sector were up 12% in the first six months of 2006. Forsberg attributes this to the refurbishment of intercity trains, improved services on board, improved punctuality and improved marketing. There are 43 X2000 tilting intercity trains in SJ's fleet that are being refurbished. Food and drink on the trains has been improved, increasing on-board sales. The ticket structure has been overhauled and increased emphasis put on internet sales. The journey time between Stockholm and Gottenburg has been reduced by cutting out stops. SJ proposed ending sleeper services on the Stockholm to Berlin route, but criticism led to the service being retained. SJ is protected from on-rail competition in the intercity sector but has competition in the regional and commuter areas. A fleet of 43 new double-deck X40 electric trains is being built for SJ by Alstom.
