Report on skid resistance test device trials 5-6 May 2005

This document describes the results of field trials held in Christchurch, New Zealand in May 2005. The objective of the trials was to gain further understanding of the complex relationship between the various test devices currently utilised to measure skid resistance and the actual performance of vehicles on road networks. The results obtained from repeat test runs under network survey conditions were also considered of specific interest. Ancillary measurements, including surface texture depth (MPD &SMTD) and carriageway profile, were also made to supplement the primary testing should such data be needed to assist later analyses. This document is the specified output from the testing days and incorporates a general analysis of the results. Austroads has expressed a desire to support similar trials on a periodic basis to assist in further advancing practitioner understanding of surface friction (skid resistance) concepts and issues.
