Implementing a Tie Degradation Model for Maintenance Planning

This article describes a new tie degradation model to aid in the software prediction of Railway Track Life-cycle Models (RTLM).RTLM incorporates a number of degradation models such as those for wheel wear, rail wear, contact fatigue growth, rail defect growth rate, wood tie degradation, turnout degradation, traffic, environment, maintenance policies, and ballast degradation and track roughness growth for given track. Ties are considered to have failed under this system under one of the following three situations: plate cutting, where the tie plate has dug into the surface of the tie; a spike kill, where a spike has become loose; and rot, where fungal decay has destroyed the tie timber. Figures are provided that illustrate tie life correlated against regional, routing, speed, curvature, rail type, plate sizes, and track modulus factors. Replacement strategies are also presented.
