Application of Fuzzy Sets for Remaining Life Assessment of Corrosion Affected Reinforced Concrete Bridge Girders

The authors present a methodology for assessing remaining reinforced concrete bridge girder life when girder reinforcing has been affected by chlorine-induced corrosion. Value uncertainty of parameters characterizing the environment, corrosion initiation time variables, and corrosion propagation rate are accounted for by being treated as fuzzy variables. A case study involving a severely distressed beam in the Rocky Point Viaduct illustrates the proposed methodology's usefulness through comparison of different damage level attainment times with field investigation observations. The authors note satisfactory agreement between reported values and predicted times, and conclude that in inspection scheduling of reinforced concrete girders in which the girder reinforcing has been affected by chlorine-induced corrosion, the proposed methodology will be useful.
