Strategic Growth Plan: Will Cut Congestion, Improve California's Transportation System

In this article the author describes the 2006 comprehensive Strategic Growth Plan (SGP) presented by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The plan promises to decrease traffic congestion, improve travel times, and to increase safety in order to ease mounting economic and population pressures on the state. The plan was authorized by California voters in 2006 through a ballot measure that will commit $37.3 billion in general obligation bonds in conjunction with existing fuel tax revenue and private investment. The monies will be used to fund 1,200 new highway lane-miles in addition to 600 miles of mass transit. Some of the funds will also be distributed to intelligent transportation systems (ITS) projects. The author closes with a list and description of a number of points that outline the SGP’s strategy for growth.
