Future Airports
In this article the author lists a number of cutting-edge airport technologies and proposed airport technologies and describes their potential utility. The first such technology, which has already received broad acceptance and is predicted to increase in use, is Internet check-in that, along with kiosk check-in, is now the manner in which 80 percent of air travelers currently check-in. Two other types of less common and burgeoning check-in procedures are remote check-ins, which could potentially use RFID to monitor bags remotely, and SMS check-in, which the author explains must be tolerant to common errors in text messaging. Mobile check-in is also suggested, with airline personnel using tablet PCs to check-in passengers when long queues and lines cannot be avoided. Also suggested are automated immigration, automated boarding, and automated bag dropping.
