EXAMINATION OF SEA LANES MOORING E AFTER TWO YEARS ON STATION
As part of the Sea Lanes Buoy Project, which extended from November 1969 to September 1970, a long term mooring materials test was performed on nylon mooring line. Buoy E was deployed in 3750 ft. of water off San Clemente Island, Calif. from March 25, 1970 to April 11, 1972 (747 days). Buoy E and its entire mooring were retrieved intact. Line tension during the retrieval exceeded 10,000 pounds several times. The line was heavily fouled in the euphotic zone (0-150 ft.). Seven significant fishbites were present on the mooring. This report details the design, deployment, retrieval of the mooring and the examination of the nylon line and hardware for damage or deterioration.(Author)
