The Influence of Human Head Tissue Properties on Intracranial Pressure Response During Direct Head Impact
The authors discuss a study using finite element analysis and Design-of-Experiment (DOE) techniques to determine how intracranial pressure response is influenced by the properties of human head tissue during direct head impact. The brain, skull, and cerebrospinal fluid of a finite element human head model were studied using a three-factor, three-level factorial experiment design to characterize human head tissue effects on intracrancial pressure response. Study results show that more modeling information can be provided through an DOE approach than an approach using a single factor at one time, and that brain incompressibility contributes to coup and contrecoup pressure variability (73% and 53%) much more than other cranial contents do.
