BLOCK PAVING - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The research leading to the publication by C and GA of a specification for the design and construction of lightly and heavily trafficked concrete block paved roads is outlined. It was found that the shape of the blocks had no effect on the load spreading ability. Static leads also showed a marginal influence of a variation in thickness. However torsional effects were found to exist in practice and the recommended thicknesses depend upon likely loadings. The sub-base thicknesses required for various subgrades and traffic loadings have also been determined. Strength tests are also included in the specification because of the 'dry-mix' used in block manufacture. Its strength must provide protection against freezing and the action of de-icing salts. Recommended techniques for the laying of blocks have been determined from laboratory and site trials. It was found that a herringbone pattern prevented creep being caused by the action of traffic. Some methods of protecting subgrades from water penetrating through the joints are discussed. /TRRL/
